The Fat Lesson – Fish Oil

Have you ever tried a fish oil supplement?  You’ve probably heard it is good for you, so you gave it a shot.  Didn’t taste too hot, did it?!

Fish oil is a very important component of getting our daily healthy fats.  There are many ways to get it in our diet. And there are supplements available that won’t leave you with bad taste in your mouth!


Continuing our discussion of healthy fats, we talk today about fish oils, which are a part of the omega-3 component of healthy fats.  Yesterday we talked about balancing omega-3 to omega-6 fat  intakes in our diet.  Problems arise when there are too many omega-6 fats in our diet so we must balance as much as possible.

Omega-3 fats include ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), DHA (docosahexaenoic acide) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). Flax oils and walnuts are rich in ALA and fish oils and algae are rich in EPA and DHA.  These are widely recognized as the most beneficial omega-3 fats.  They are very important to our overall health, mostly because of their incorporation into the membranes of our cells, which helps to keep our cells more “fluid”. A low intake of DHA can result in memory loss, difficulty concentrating, mood disorders and has even been linked to Alzheimer’s.

To optimize your health, it is recommended that about 900 mg of EPA and DHA is consumed per day. This is roughly the equivalent of 3 grams of fish oil.  EPA and DHA is prevalent in fish. Unfortunately, most commercial fish is often contaminated to various degrees. Therefore it is best to keep fish intake to a minimum if you are supplementing with fish oil.

Fish oil has been specifically shown to do the following:

  • Decrease the risks for heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers
  • Increase the metabolic rate
  • Lead to reductions in fat mass and increases in lean mass
  • Reduce inflammation in the body
  • Reduce pain associated with inflammatory disorders such as arthritis and chronic fatigue
  • Improve mood while decreasing symptoms of depression
