Food for Your Brain

In yesterday’s post, we talked about how we are what we eat.   Today, we are going to see how we need brain food – we need nourishment and proper nutrients for overall healthy function and for our brains to be sharper longer.

You have probably heard a lot about fat.  And fat has become a bad word in our society. Not all fat, however, is bad.  Our bodies need essential fatty acids in order to function properly.   Healthy fats are very important to us.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids are important in the normal operation of our metabolism.  They are found in three forms:  ALA are plant-based and EPA and DHA are marine based.  Examples of marine based oils are found primarily in fish oil. Plant oils can be found in walnut, chia and flaxseed to name a few.

These fatty acids have many benefits for our health-lowering blood pressure, decreases the incident of sudden cardiac arrest, decreases the chances of coronary heart disease to name a few.  They have also been studied to be beneficial for those suffering from arthritis, ADHD and bipolar disorder.
